Marma Point Therapy

Marma means “hidden”or “secret” in Sanskrit. Marma point therapy is an energy healing practice that emerged within the 5000-year-old Ayurvedic healing system. It is commonly believed to have been the foundation for therapies such as Acupuncture, Acupressure and Reflexology. Marma has its roots in a South India martial art known as Kalaripayattu. It was an era when one’s expertise in hand-to-hand combat was the mark of an exceptional fighter. These ancient heroes understanding of our anatomy was crucial in vanquishing the enemy.

Marma Point Therapy is a pressure therapy applied to Marma points that helps kindle dhatu (tissue) agni, burns cellular ama (toxicity), and breaks down crystals of unresolved emotions. That’s why marma therapy can quickly relieve many conditions, such as migraine headache, joint pain, and muscle spasm etc.

What Is a Marma Point?

Marmas are vital energy points or junctions where two or more types of tissues meet e.g. muscles, veins, tendons, ligaments etc. Marma points are highly concentrated in Prana (Energy). Marmas connect an individual’s energy aura to the physical body. Your body contains 107 Marma points. Pain or tenderness at the site of the Marma is the body’s way of conveying that there is a weakness, impurity or imbalance in the biological systems associated with that Marma point.

Where are Marma Points located?

Physically, the Marma points are located where tendons, bones, muscles, joints, veins, nerves and other tissues meet. Each point corresponds to a dosha (constitutional energy), dhatu(tissue) and srota (physical channel). Marmani locations are organized according to their region of the body and their relationship to internal and external features, doshas and subdoshas.

How Marma Point Therapy Work?

These energy points have wide variety of functions that affect the body, mind and spirit.

When a healer/practitioner applies either gentle or deep pressure (according to the situation) to the Marma point that touch sends a complex biochemical and neuro-electrical impulse. The energy of the pressure passes through the gateway of the Marma to the respective srotas (channels) and their organs and start balancing prana, tejas and ojas of the tissues.

There is a plethora of common practices that can disturb the natural flow of Prana through the Marma points.

  • Consumption of devitalized food
  • Poor sleep habits
  • Emotional stress
  • Overexposure to sun
  • Lack of exercise
  • Pollution
  • Unnatural lighting
  • Insufficient connection to nature
